2011 Colorado Cup Champions

Head Coach Bill Hempen hoists the Cup!

Your Colorado Buffaloes did it!  We brought home the first annual Colorado Cup to Boulder!

We opened up the CO Cup weekend with Colorado College down at the University of Denver that Friday afternoon.  Our first goal came in the first 2 minutes of the game.  We were awarded a free kick right outside Colorado College's box.  Without hesitation, junior Amy Barczuk played it quickly to freshman Carly Bolyard to get Carly's first collegiate career goal!  About 12 minutes later, Carly found sophomore Hayley Hughes with an endline ball played across the goal, and Hayley was there to slot it in.  But it didn't stop there...We went on to win the match 5-0 with goals from sophomore Anne Stuller, junior Lauren Shaner and freshman Darcy Jerman.  Nonetheless, it was a great way to start our regular season.

After a nice training session on Saturday to shake out our legs from Friday night, our sights were focused for Sunday's match against the University of Northern Colorado.  At this point, the University of Denver had beaten Northern Colorado 2-1 in OT on Friday, so we were both looking to garner another W in order to take home the cup.

We stepped onto the field to kick-off against Northern Colorado at 3pm.  Denver had just beaten Colorado College 2-1, so it was a must win situation for us.  Sure enough, our Buffs stepped out on the field and made it happen.  However, the goals didn't come as soon as they had on Friday.  Our first goal came just minutes before halftime as freshman Clare Madden followed up on the ball that popped out from an earlier shot.  She found senior Kate Russell making a run into the box who then found the back of the net.  Northern Colorado was not going to give up, and we can never be satisfied or comfortable with any lead at halftime.  The energy and the commitment to win tackles, play at pace, move the ball, move off the ball, etc...were all things that had to be raised.  So, in front of over 1,900 fans, the Buffaloes found the back of the net twice more by goals from Hayley Hughes and Darcy Jerman.

The points were tallied.  And, it was quite clear that with 2 wins with 8 goals total and 0 goals allowed, the Buffs were the 2011 Colorado Cup Champions!
